The International Festival, one of the largest student-organized events on the Princeton University campus in terms of scope and resources, will kick off with an opening ceremony at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 27, at Richardson Auditorium, Alexander Hall. The ceremony is free and open to the public.
Since its inception 36 years ago, the International Festival has been a vibrant celebration of the diverse ethnicities and culture represented on the Princeton campus. The festival will span the entire month of April, featuring activities with international-themed performances, films, conferences and parties.
The focal point of the opening ceremony will be the international cultural performances. The shows will include performance styles from around the globe, featuring student performance groups, including Triple 8, Naacho, Georgian Choir, Ballroom, Wildcats, Capoeira and Tapcats. International cultural performances range from tap dancing to a capella, and from ballroom to martial arts. Other highlights of the opening ceremony are the procession of the flags, with over 45 students bearing the flags of their native countries. Princeton University President Shirley M. Tilghman will deliver brief opening remarks.
The opening ceremony begins what will be a month packed with events that seek both to entertain and also to educate the community on internationalism, multiculturalism, and global, cultural and ethnic tolerance. Some highlights of the month include a concert by Princeton Ballet Folklorico, the University’s traditional Mexican dance group; Asian Night Market organized by the Asian Heritage Council; a talent and fashion show followed by Global Groove Night; and film seminars and discussions featuring the films "Good Morning, Night," "Fateless" and "Devils on the Doorstep."
The month will close with the annual "Global Village," which is a showcase of artifacts and other items from many nations, which will take place at the annual town-gown event Communiversity, along with a joint gala night "Passport to Indonesia on a Tour of the World" with PERMIAS (the Indonesian Students Association at Princeton) on Saturday, April 24, in the Fields Center at 58 Prospect St.
The Princeton University International Festival is organized by a board of dedicated international students under the auspices of the Consortium of International Student Organizations and the University's Davis International Center.
